Bill Drexler, Grey Area at The Green Standard After Party

Bill Drexler’s path to cannabis retail began more than two decades ago with two trips to Amsterdam.

After experiencing the Cannabis Cup in 2001 and 2002, Bill’s curiosity about the plant grew into a lasting passion. Today, that passion has become The Grey Area, a locally owned cannabis dispensary on Grand Avenue in Saint Paul.

A Passion Turned Purpose

Bill started The Grey Area with a straightforward goal: to provide carefully selected, high-quality cannabis products to the community where he lives.

The Grey Area opened in November 2024 as a lower-potency hemp edible retailer. At the time, Minnesota’s adult-use market was still taking shape, and there was no certainty that the business would receive a cannabis license.

Still, Bill decided to move forward.

Opening the store meant navigating an evolving regulatory environment, learning compliance, and building out the space with the help of his family.

“Taking the risk of opening up a shop entirely revolving around cannabis with no certainty of even getting a license” was one of the biggest challenges of the early days, Bill shared.

Through every obstacle, he relied on persistence, patience, and a willingness to keep moving forward.

“I overcame it by just taking the leap and pushing forward, no matter what obstacles were put in front of me, and having a lot of patience,” he said.

That patience paid off on April 22, 2026, when The Grey Area received its adult-use license and transitioned into Minnesota’s emerging adult-use cannabis market.

Since then, the team has expanded its selection of adult-use products while continuing to strengthen its understanding of compliance and day-to-day operations.

For Bill, the purpose of the store can be summarized in one sentence:

“We help people find the right cannabis products with honest guidance in a laid-back atmosphere.”’

Leading with Purpose

Deep roots in Saint Paul and a commitment to education are what Bill believes set The Grey Area apart.

With decades of personal cannabis experience and a passion for supporting small businesses, his focus has always been on building lasting relationships, not simply making sales.

His philosophy is simple:

“We don’t just sell cannabis, we help people understand it.”

Bill wants customers to feel comfortable asking questions, learning about different products, and finding options that fit their individual preferences and experience levels.

Throughout the process of building The Grey Area, Bill says some of his biggest leadership lessons have been learning to lead by example, remain persistent while practicing patience, and trust others by learning to delegate.

He is equally proud of the people around him, crediting his team’s dedication to his vision and the countless hours they have invested to help bring The Grey Area to life.

For Bill, one of the most rewarding parts of working in cannabis is being able to turn something he has cared about for most of his adult life into a career.

Rooted in Community

Community is not simply part of The Grey Area’s business model, it is the foundation of it.

Since opening in 2024, the company has prioritized Minnesota products and worked with local businesses across its operations whenever possible. The team also supports the cannabis community by attending, participating in, and sponsoring local events.

As a locally owned Saint Paul business, Bill believes The Grey Area’s success is directly connected to the neighborhoods and people it serves.

“Community is at the heart of everything we do at The Grey Area,” he said. “As a locally owned business in Saint Paul, we believe our success is directly connected to the people and neighborhoods we serve.”

Bill and his family enjoy the Grand Ole Day parade in St. Paul, one of St. Paul’s biggest events.

Bill’s commitment to education also comes from a personal experience involving his brother-in-law, a retired U.S. Air Force veteran living with PTSD.

By taking the time to understand his individual needs and helping him navigate different cannabis products, Bill says he saw how thoughtful, individualized guidance could make a meaningful difference.

That experience reinforced his belief that cannabis education should begin with listening. It continues to shape how he approaches conversations with customers today.

Bill also draws inspiration from other neighborhood businesses.

One of his favorite Minnesota businesses is Brunson’s Pub, a Saint Paul restaurant owned by friends of his. Watching its owners navigate the pandemic and overcome the challenges facing independent restaurants has been especially meaningful to him.

Their persistence reflects Bill’s broader belief that local businesses become stronger when they support one another.

Growing What’s Next

The next chapter for The Grey Area is already underway.

On June 30, 2026, Bill received the building permit needed to begin construction on the company’s indoor cultivation facility.

Over the next 12 to 24 months, the primary goal is to complete the buildout and bring The Grey Area’s first harvest of premium indoor flower to Minnesota shelves in early 2027.

Bill sees cultivation as an opportunity to produce premium craft cannabis while keeping pricing fair for consumers.

As Minnesota’s market continues to mature, he hopes healthy competition will lead to greater product selection, stronger quality, and more affordable prices.

But Bill believes one of the industry’s biggest opportunities has less to do with maximizing short-term profits and more to do with building long-term relationships.

As The Grey Area prepares to introduce its own flower, he wants to work with retailers in ways that support their success and create partnerships that last.

His goal is not simply to place a product on a shelf. It is to build enough trust that retailers, producers, and customers can continue growing together as Minnesota’s market develops.

Lessons from the Journey

For anyone considering entering the cannabis industry, Bill’s advice is straightforward:

“Be ready to work hard.”

He encourages new entrepreneurs to do their homework, build as many relationships as possible, lean on friends and family for support, and avoid rushing major decisions.

Bill celebrates The Grey Area's first sale with his family, whom he credits for helping him and The Grey Area become what they are today.

Whether hiring contractors, planning a buildout, or navigating unfamiliar regulations, Bill recommends gathering multiple estimates and seeking advice before making major commitments.

He is also the first to admit that mistakes have been part of nearly every stage of the process.

“I have made a mistake every step of this process, and I have learned from those mistakes,” he said. “Do as much homework as you can before making decisions you’re unfamiliar with.”

Rather than viewing those mistakes as setbacks, Bill considers them lessons that have helped him build a stronger business.

Proudly Serving Saint Paul

The Grey Area’s next chapter will include construction, cultivation, new products, and continued growth within Minnesota’s adult-use market.

But even as the business expands, Bill wants its identity to remain grounded in Saint Paul.

The Grey Area is locally owned, and Bill was born and raised in the city. He is proud to serve the community that shaped him and to build a business rooted in integrity, quality, and community.

Bill also hopes to continue making connections with cannabis enthusiasts, connoisseurs, small businesses, and others helping Minnesota’s industry move forward.

“We’re all about supporting each other and growing together,”
